Last blog for a bit

I'm a rotten blogger - proper bloggers blog from time to time. But I've been so busy and rather stressed.

So that's why this has been my only post in ten days and here's why there probably won't be any more until about June 18: I'm off to Scotland to see my girlfriend Sue and I expect to be spending more time going up hills than being online. But I do expect to have a lot of good photos of Scottish birds to post when I'm back.

Very best wishes to everybody,

Tom

Sri Lankan canoes and birds

I have been fascinated by Sri Lankan canoes. They are the first I've seen in my travels that have outriggers. (I believe these are common in the Pacific islands?) I'm sometimes obsessive compulsive about symmetry so I wasn't a fan at first but now I've seen them in action I'm really impressed by their stability, which of course is the point. The outrigger resists heeling towards the pontoon because it would press it underwater and it resists heeling away because it would lift its extended weight. The fishermen are generally throwing nets for prawns, which I will document once I've bought a longer lens, and for servicing fish traps.

I'm continuously updating my Sri Lankan birds page. When I get the above-mentioned lens I should be able to post better photos but please have a look now.

Consolidated Blog

There are zillions of dogs in Batticaloa. Many are mangy and disabled. Rumor has it that last year there was a huge campaign to eradicate the dog population by means of poisoned meat. The strong healthy dogs won the race to the meat and left the tired, weak and genetically inferior to carry on with the task...

My newest excuse for not having posted to my blog recently is that I have been migrating all my old posts (in two earlier formats) from my own website to blogspot. (It was a bit arduous.) They now appear here under the original dates. I hope now to resume normal Haythornthwaite Blog services.

Comments (click at the bottom of every post) are very welcome!

NOW JUST 17 DAYS TO GO UNTIL MY HOLIDAY!!
